The Process

Goals. Everyone loves talking about goals. WE at 413 love talking about goals. I think sometimes we get too excited for a weight loss goal, a new PR, or “win a race” type of goal. Result based goals, if you will. What can happen when we focus too much on that end result is we forget about what needs to happen to get there. And when we don’t reach that goal, it’s pretty defeating. So how can we avoid this? By focusing on the process and the actions that will get us to said result. Having a goal with no plan to execute is like having a place you want to drive to, but no directions or map to get there.

How many times have you said, “I want to lose 10 lbs,” “I want to run an 8 minute mile,” “I want to lift X amount of weight?” Well I will be the first to raise my hand, I have set goals for myself and not even come close to reaching them more times than I can count. So I changed my focus. After repeatedly saying I wanted to PR my deadlift, and repeatedly NOT PRing my deadlift….I changed my goal to “I want to complete this 10 week strength program”…and guess what, I PR’d my deadlift! Why? Because I spent 10 weeks working on my strength. No end goal in mind, other than to be consistent in that program and show up every single session in the gym whether I wanted to that day or not.

“You don’t get results by focusing on results, you get results by focusing on the actions that produce results.”

-Mike Hawkins

A lot of you will have a goal of “not gaining weight over the holidays”…but do you have a plan in place to achieve that? What is the process going to look like to “not gain weight?” Switch that goal to something you can actively focus on like “work out 3-4x a week and track my calories.” If you’re doing those two things, you are a lot more likely to not gain weight. If you have something you want to achieve, think about what is going to get you there, then make THAT your goal.
